Chumeia Winery

Chumeia Winery

Chumeia is the ancient Greek word for Alchemy, the mythical transformation of common elements into precious metals. This is the goal of winemaker Lee Nesbitt, converting basic dirt, water and sunlight into precious wines. Along with partner Eric Danninger, he is well along the path.

The winery and tasting room are in a barn like building reached by a gravel road, but don't be put off by the entrance. The day that I was there they were pouring a Dusi Vineyard Zin that made it worth while. They also have some property planted to "Iron Man" Zin.

The winery offers tours of the cave complex.

They offer three Zinfandels, all single vineyard bottlings. They are from "Remo Belli Vineyard", "Winebush Vineyard" and "Steinbeck Vineyard"

Robert Hall Winery

Robert Hall Winery

Robert Hall Winery is in an impressive Italian villa overlooking the highway. Complete with two Bocce Ball courts and a 19,000 square foot cave complex, it is an impressive site to visit. The caverns took over 20 months to complete. Each cavern room can host 125 people for a sit down dinner.

While they only have a single Zinfandel, it is worth the visit, using fruit from the Richard Sauret Vineyard.

Tobin James

Tobin James Cellars

Tobin (Toby) James was an assistant winemaker in 1985 when he made his first batch of "Blue Moon" Zin. In 1994, after years of making his wines at other wineries, he built the current winery on the site of an old stagecoach stop. The tasting room, featuring a mahogany bar, complete with a brass rail, from the 1860s, may seem like an unlikely setting for fine wines, but it somehow all comes together nicely.

Tobin James Cellars, with winemakers Toby James and Lance Silver, makes ten different Zinfandels. The only bad note for some is that six of these are normally available only to the wine club members. The other four are "Ballistic", "James Gang Reserve", "French Camp Vineyard" and "Blue Moon Reserve". All are made exclusively from Paso Robles fruit.
